Sober living environments play a pivotal role in aiding individuals to sustain their recovery journey by fostering a supportive atmosphere rooted in accountability, responsibility, and camaraderie. These spaces offer a structured environment where residents are encouraged to uphold their commitment to sobriety while navigating the challenges of daily life. Through shared responsibilities such as chores and household duties, individuals develop a sense of accountability not only to themselves but also to their peers.

What is Foundation?

Like your recovery, your home and future are built upon a strong foundation.

Previously, our network of Sober Living Residences were only available to people as they completed primary care through a Together We Can program. Within the last few years, we noticed a huge shortfall of spaces for people fresh out of treatment.

Together We Can formed Foundation Sober Living to provide ANYONE completing a drug or alcohol treatment program access to our wide network of more than 20 sober living properties across British Columbia.

Housing Policy

Our sober living housing policies help you find structure and responsibility as you begin your way back to living on a daily basis in the real world. We’ve created these sober living house policies to help our residents develop self-discipline and accountability. But the reality is this: if you break these rules there are consequences. You could be discharged immediately, lose privileges, or be expelled if you break the rules more than once. These rules and our policy will help you develop new habits while strengthening the foundation of recovery in a life of sobriety.

CRITERIA

Residents must be nearing completion, or have completed an Intensive Outpatient or Outpatient Treatment program within the last 6 months. Residents must maintain sobriety and meet the following criteria:

  • Residents must complete the Foundation Sober Living application paperwork, including a release to communicate with Together We Can staff, and agreement to abide by house Rules and Regulations.
  • Residents must have a way to pay residence fees and cost of living, either through family support, suitable government benefits, or employment.
  • Residents must be 18 years or older.
  • Potential residents must not be classified as sexual or violent offenders.
  • Residents must be willing to be drug tested at random intervals with no objection. We firmly believe that an integral part of recovery begins with being accountable without excuse. Failure of the resident to meet any of these criteria may preclude them from residency.

House Rules

Foundation residents abide by a strict set of rules and policies that ensure our housing is safe and supportive of recovery. Our rules will be presented in their entirety, reviewed, and signed by applicants at intake. These rules include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Foundation residents abide by a zero-tolerance policy for drug, alcohol or mind-altering substance use. This includes the use of steroids and/or OTC synthetic drugs. Residents are expected to stay clean and sober for the duration of their stay.
  • Foundation residents abide by a zero-tolerance policy for violence, abusive behaviour, or any verbal/physical confrontations with any resident or staff.
  • Foundation residents abide by a zero-tolerance policy for theft or destruction of housing or another residents’ property.
  • Foundation residents abide by a zero-tolerance policy for sexual activity between residents.
  • Residents must abide by rules regarding their prescribed medication. All medication will be kept secured until residents self-administer at the designated time prescribed. No NARCOTIC medications on-site unless in an approved locking storage. Any theft, abuse, or misuse of prescribed medication will be grounds for eviction.
  • As a resident at Foundation, we expect residents to abide by a code of personal ethical conduct that includes reporting any violations observed in housing. Knowledge of, but failure to report prohibited behaviour will be treated as having participated in the prohibited behaviour.
  • Smoking is not permitted inside Foundation residences. Porch and outdoor area ash trays must be used always and cleaned regularly.
  • All new residents will have a 14-day blackout period with no overnight passes and limited access to any personal vehicle.
  • Residents at Foundation will abide by all curfews and will not stay elsewhere overnight unless approved by Foundation staff in advance.
  • If for any reason, including random testing, a Resident is required to provide a drug test, the resident must take the test immediately without leaving the sight of the site Manager.

Management & structure

In each Foundation Sober Living residence, a House Manager (“HM”) is responsible for monitoring the Residences, monitoring the schedule and behavior of the Residents, the transport of Residents, and other miscellaneous tasks. HM’s report to the Program Manager, who will address any issues or concerns that arise.

CONFLICTS

We understand that in early recovery there will be conflicts. People who have survived what we have survived have strong personalities, and when several strong personalities live together, there will be times when conflict is inevitable. However, we believe that it is also a strong part of recovery to begin to learn how to navigate through conflict with integrity and compassion. Accordingly, residents are expected to refrain from engaging in any physical approach to conflict resolution and are expected to be open and willing to receive support from our trained staff in addressing, discussing, and taking ownership of one’s own role in any conflict. Residents are expected to be prepared to work through and resolve conflict no matter how difficult or foreign this concept is. Residents will be supported in these efforts by staff.

VIOLATION policy

All Foundation Sober Living rules will be strictly enforced. Initial or minor violations will result in a verbal warning, with appropriate consequences. A secondary violation after a verbal warning will result in a signed behavioral contract, with appropriate consequences. Any third or repeated violation will result in discharge. The most common consequences applied will be revocation of privileges. For instance, a Resident may be required to perform additional cleaning duties, relinquish electronic devices for a period of time or be placed on curfew restriction.

OVERNIGHT PASSES

Residents may be eligible for overnight passes. These must be requested in writing. Residents will be expected to depart and return within a clearly defined time frame and may be required to take a Urine Analysis and Breathalyzer upon return to housing. Any abuse of this privilege will result in a loss or revocation of privileges and/or consideration for eviction. Residents are responsible for getting another resident to cover any household responsibilities you may have during your overnight out.

Resident Responsibilities

Residents are responsible to comply with House Rules, Restrictions and expectations. These include but are not limited to: attendance of 3 fellowship meetings, weekly house meeting, abiding by curfew, completing daily and weekly chores, paying rent in a timely fashion, and seeking gainful employment.
