Bowling Bowling

Just for fun, the clients at Together We Can’s Discovery Program headed to the bowling alley to get their strike on. Fun and laughs aside, bowling also offers numerous health benefits. Since all ages of men come to TWC to heal, bowling presents itself as the perfect game where everyone can compete, socialize and unwind. It is common knowledge that social relationships built around shared interests can increase longevity.  When bowling, the guys are cultivating relationships and building friendships all while increasing the heart rate and promoting healthy heart muscles. Bowling also relieves stress and is easy to learn so even the most tightly wound person can benefit. A report from The Mayo Clinic states up to 275 calories can be burned with every hour spent bowling.

Other added bonuses are that bowling tones and strengthens muscles, speeds up the metabolism and exercises tendons, ligaments and joints. Bowling is also the perfect way for a recovering addict to sharpen motor skills and refine tactics that may have been dulled through active addiction. Throwing the bowling ball and hitting the pins requires hand-eye coordination, focus, concentration, tactical strategy and mental alertness. Another fine attribute of bowling is that it reduces the risk of disease. A sedentary lifestyle is one of the leading risk factors of heart disease. Exercise, including bowling, lowers the risk of stroke, heart attacks and diabetes while increasing bone density, improving circulation and lowering cholesterol levels and blood pressure. It also helps the body utilize oxygen more efficiently. But enough of science….they just went for the fun!!
